Once We Were Africans
Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, UK.

Black Arts Alliance commissioned Anthony Jones to photograph Black, multi-generational families residing in the Greater Manchester region.

This project aimed to confound the myth that the Black communities are a first generation presence in the UK. The exhibition also aimed to document and celebrate families made up of third, fourth or sixth generation members and to demonstrate that for many, the sense of an allegiance to just one culture and country does not exist, and that many young people see themselves as both Black and British and rejoice in this hybridity.

The exhibition launched in October 2005 during Acts of Achievement, the North Wests annual celebration of Black History Month which is led by Black Arts Alliance.
